Liberty Tree Faith Quilt on Display at Library during Feb.
A community quilt crafted in 2005 to commemorate Brockton's Liberty Tree is on display at the Brockton Main Library for Black History Month. The 10x12-foot work features dozens of colorful fabric leaves contributed by members of the public who also shared stories about how the Liberty Tree and the ideals it symbolized touched their lives. The Liberty Tree stood on what is now Frederick Douglass Avenue in downtown Brockton for over 300 years. The historic marker of the Underground Railroad was cut down Dec. 13, 2004 after being deemed unsafe. A "slice" of the fabled tree is on permanent view at the library's 2nd level.
